“Why Am I Still Tired Even After Sleeping?” - A Doctor’s 3 Tips for Better Sleep

Experts suggest that increasing sleep pressure through daytime activity, reducing caffeine intake, and maintaining an optimal sleep environment can help improve sleep quality.
Recently, a video titled “Why You’re Still Tired After Sleeping — The Dangerous Illusion That You’re Getting Good Sleep. To Stay Healthy, You Must Sleep Well First” was uploaded to the YouTube channel “Doctor Lee Won-kyung Who Detects Cancer.”
Professor Lee Won-kyung, a radiologist, emphasized the importance of high-quality sleep. He explained, “Sleep is when damaged tissues, muscle cells, and immune cells in our body are restored. During deep sleep, the spaces between neurons expand, allowing waste products and toxins in the brain to be cleared out.”
He added that if you still feel fatigued after waking up, it may indicate poor sleep quality, stressing that falling into deep sleep is essential.
First, he recommended staying active during the day. “Don’t stay sedentary—do some stretching and keep your body moving. Physical activity increases sleep pressure, helping you fall into deeper sleep. In short, you need to build up physical fatigue during the day,” he explained.
He also addressed caffeine consumption: “Some people say they can still sleep well after consuming caffeine, but that usually just means they fall asleep quickly—it doesn’t mean they’re getting deep, restorative sleep.”
Lastly, Professor Lee emphasized the importance of body temperature regulation. “It’s difficult to fall into deep sleep when your body is too warm. Lowering the room temperature slightly before bedtime can help you sleep better,” he advised.
