Is Sleeping Longer Actually Riskier? Mortality Risk Higher With 9+ Hours of Sleep Than With 6 Hours or Less

by Hyzen USA 25 Sep 2026

People who sleep nine hours or more a day have a 17% higher risk of death from any cause compared with those who sleep seven to eight hours, according to a new study.

The Daily Mail reported on the 26th that Taiwanese researchers analyzed more than 30 years of data on sleep duration and mortality. The study was published on the 15th in the international journal Sleep and Biological Rhythms.

Researchers from the Institute of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at National Taiwan University’s College of Public Health and other institutions analyzed data from Taiwan’s Chin-Shan Community Cardiovascular Cohort Study.

The researchers examined the relationship between usual sleep duration and mortality risk among 3,305 participants, excluding those with pre-existing cardiovascular disease or insufficient data.

Participants were divided into three groups based on their usual sleep duration: six hours or less, seven to eight hours, and nine hours or more per day. The median follow-up period was 30.8 years.

The group that slept seven to eight hours had the lowest mortality rate. The age-standardized mortality rate was 10.57 deaths per 1,000 person-years, compared with 10.97 in the six-hours-or-less group and 11.27 in the nine-hours-or-more group.

However, the results differed after the researchers statistically adjusted for other factors that could affect mortality.

Compared with people who slept seven to eight hours, those who slept nine hours or more had a 1.17-fold, or 17%, higher risk of death from any cause. In contrast, no statistically significant difference was found among those who slept six hours or less.

The researchers said, “Longer sleep duration was associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality,” adding that systolic blood pressure may partly explain the association.
